A good friend of mine, Sasha Moinzadeh, of Bellevue Pediatric Therapy is walking inthe "Walk Now For Autism" at University of Washington in Seattle this Saturday, October 13th. Cure Autism Now / Autism Speaks have pioneered scientific research in the field of autism and is doing what was once thought impossible…hurrying science to find a cure for current and future generations. They are Sasha's charity of choice and she is 1/4 of the way to her goal of $2,000.00.

New! Wednesday Farmer's Markets on Vashon Island

The Wednesday night farmer's markets have begun on Vashon Island! Now there are two opportunities each week to buy fresh island-grown produce and island-crafted gifts at the Village Green!! Notice that I qualified that statement with "at the Village Green," since you can also get fresh produce and u-pick items at farms around the island throughout the week! If you are interested in learning more about where you can get fresh fruits and veggies on the island, stop by the VIGA (Vashon Island Growers Association) booth at the Farmer's Market for a list of island farm stands and more information. You can also sign up to be on their mailing list!

Fun and Free!!

There is an excellent article on Yahoo! News regarding Freecycle, the online community bulletin board that enables people to keep items in use as opposed to in the garbage. I have been using freecycle for several years, in the Midwest and in the Pacific Northwest, and love the fact that the community can not only share items that are useful with others, but they can also ask and receive when there is need. How many times do you have that odd item around (like the car charger for the cell phone that you lost last year?) that you really have no need of, but it is in good, useable shape? I have seen items from art supplies and additional landscaping materials, to computers and the new Harry Potter book. What a wonderful resource!

Where the Water Begins...Free Workshop!

King Conservation District is offering a free workshop for property owners interested in: a stable natural shoreline; minimizing the potential for erosion and landslides; or, improving fish & wildlife habitat. The workshop, "Where the Water Begins," is being held at the Vashon Maury Island Land Trust on Saturday, June 2nd or at Discovery Park on Saturday, June 16th. The Vashon workshop runs from 9 am to 1 pm, with an optional beach walk from 1 pm to 3:30 pm. What a timely and relevant (and free) workshop! When I received the post card announcing this workshop, I thought, "This is one of those times where I am thinking about something so much, that the answer just presents itself." Or maybe it is simply on the minds of everyone who lives in close proximity to our shorelines.

Vashon Island Farmer's Market

The weather this Spring has been amazingly beautiful! What a blessed change after the harsh challenges of this past Winter (I almost wrote "Wind"er!). With no excuse or desire to stay inside, so many people are out and about working on their yards, going to the beach, and revelling in the natural beauties of the Pacific Northwest. One of my favorite things about this time of year is the farmer's market on Vashon Island. The Vashon Farmers Market is brimming with all of the joy and bounty that this region brings, and exemplifies many of the wonderful aspects of the island community! The market is open from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM every Saturday starting in April and running through the second Saturday in October. The market features locally grown produce (the seasonal harvest! the healthiest and most delicious foods that your body needs), delicacies, amazing crafts and jewelry, live music, and more! You see people talking, laughing, exchanging ideas, discussing the goodies at the market or discussing politics. Children of all ages are running around, climbing trees, playing, and eating the fabulous fruits for sale at the market.

Here is a description of the market this weekend:

"This Sunday is Mother's Day for those who like to celebrate it. If you feel like buying [Mom] something at the market, choose from fresh flowers, hand-made chocolate, lovely jewelry, wine, a tomato plant, fresh milk or cheese, a nursery plant, or a nice bowl of miso soup. Island soap maker Sherri Mask of Rainy Day Garden will be giving away free slices from a beautiful, very authentic looking cake, made of handmade soap, to all mothers."
